How to Choose Plastic Pipe Extrusion Machine for PVC and PE Pipe

For most pipe manufacturers, the real goal is to build a stable, efficient and profitable production line that can continuously produce qualified pipes for local market demand.

A buyer may start by asking a simple question: “What machine do I need to make PVC or PE pipes?” But as the project moves forward, more details appear: pipe diameter, wall thickness, output capacity, raw material formula, cooling length, factory space, power supply, labor cost, automation level and after-sales service.

Start with the Pipe Material: PVC or PE

The first decision is the pipe material. PVC and PE are both widely used in pipe production, but they require different extrusion systems.

PVC is commonly used for water supply pipes, drainage pipes, electrical conduit pipes, cable protection pipes and building-related pipe applications. PVC material is usually processed with a conical twin screw extruder because PVC powder, calcium carbonate and additives need strong mixing, stable plasticizing and controlled processing temperature.

PE is commonly used for water supply pipes, gas pipes, irrigation pipes, HDPE pipes and large diameter pressure pipes. PE material is normally processed by a single screw extruder because PE granules require efficient melting, stable output and good pressure control.

In most cases, a PVC pipe production project and a PE pipe production project should be planned as two different production lines.

Confirm the Pipe Diameter and Wall Thickness

Pipe diameter is one of the most important factors when choosing a Plastic Pipe Extrusion Machine. The machine for small electrical conduit pipes is different from the machine for large drainage pipes or pressure pipes.

For PVC pipes, buyers should confirm the pipe diameter range first, such as 16–32mm, 20–63mm, 50–160mm, 110–315mm or larger sizes. Small diameter pipes may focus more on production speed and multi-pipe output, while larger pipes require stronger extruder capacity, stable haul-off force and accurate cutting.

For PE pipes, the diameter range can be even wider. Small PE pipes may be coiled for transportation, while large diameter PE pipes usually require longer cooling tanks, stronger traction and a stable cutting system.

Wall thickness also matters. Two pipes may have the same outer diameter, but if one pipe has a much thicker wall, the required output, die design and cooling capacity will be different. When asking for a quotation, buyers should always provide both pipe diameter and wall thickness.

 

Choose the Right Extruder Configuration

The extruder is the heart of the Plastic Pipe Extrusion Machine. If the extruder is not properly selected, the entire production line may face problems such as unstable output, poor pipe surface, uneven wall thickness or high material waste.

For PVC pipe production, a conical twin screw extruder is commonly used. It is suitable for PVC powder processing and can provide good mixing and plasticizing performance. This is important because PVC pipe quality depends heavily on formula stability, temperature control and screw design.

For PE pipe production, a single screw extruder is usually used. The screw and barrel design should match PE or HDPE material characteristics. For large diameter pipes, the extruder must provide stable pressure and continuous output for long production runs.

Pay Attention to Die Head and Calibration System

The die head shapes the molten material into the pipe form. A good die head should provide uniform material distribution and stable flow. Poor die design can lead to uneven wall thickness, unstable pipe size or poor surface quality.

After the pipe leaves the die head, it enters the vacuum calibration tank. This part controls pipe outer diameter, cooling and shape stability. For both PVC and PE pipes, calibration accuracy directly affects the final pipe quality.

For a PVC Pipe Extrusion Line, the vacuum tank and cooling tank should match the pipe diameter range and production speed. For a PE Pipe Extrusion Line, especially large diameter pipe production, sufficient cooling length is very important because PE pipes need enough time to cool and stabilize before cutting or stacking.

Die head

Check the Haul-Off and Cutting System

The haul-off machine pulls the pipe forward at a stable speed. If the traction speed is unstable, the pipe wall thickness may become uneven. If the pulling force is not enough, large diameter pipes may deform or move unevenly.

For small PVC pipes, a belt or caterpillar haul-off may be used depending on pipe size and speed. For larger pipes, a stronger multi-caterpillar haul-off is usually needed. PE large diameter pipe production often requires stable and synchronized traction to ensure accurate pipe forming.

The cutting system should match the pipe material and size. PVC pipes may use a dust-free cutter or planetary cutter. PE pipes may use a chipless cutter or knife cutting system depending on diameter and production requirements.

Haul off machine

Consider Belling, Coiling or Stacking Requirements

Different pipes need different downstream handling systems.

PVC drainage pipes and water pipes may require a belling machine to form socket ends. Electrical conduit pipes may have different socket or connection requirements depending on the market. If the final product needs socketing, the buyer should include the belling machine in the full line configuration.

Small PE pipes may need a coiler because coiled pipes are easier to transport and sell. Large diameter PE pipes usually need a stacker or pipe support system for straight pipe unloading.

Before buying a Plastic Pipe Extrusion Machine, buyers should think about how the pipe will be sold, packed and transported. The correct downstream system can reduce labor cost and improve production efficiency.
